CORRECTION: From author Jeff Broome. I think I got a date wrong in talking about Kile’s enlistment. 1865, 5th Cavalry. Desertion. 1867 enlistment as Kelley in Custer’s 7th. Desertion. 1867 enlistment in 37th Infantry. Prison and dishonorable discharge for drunkenness and theft. Escaped, turned himself in for 1st desertion. Medal of Honor. Enlistment ends May 1870. 1st Infantry enlistment as Kyle, the misspelling of his name in getting his Medal. Desertion in 1 day. One week later, enlistment as Kile back in 7th Cavalry. Three weeks later, dead by Hickok. 24 years old. Died July 18, 1870, the morning after being shot.
