The Wild West History Association Is Born 1/1/2008

On New Years day 2008 a new western history association was born. The proud parents are the National Association for Outlaw and Lawmen History (NOLA), formed in 1974, and the Western Outlaw-Lawman History Association (WOLA), founded in 1990. These two history groups, with a worldwide membership, have joined in the formation of the Wild West History Association (WWHA). This merger creates the primary Wild West history organization in the world.

The new Wild West History Association is a non-profit corporation charted in the state of Texas dedicated to providing quality publications, the bi-monthly Journal of the Wild West History Association, for the enlightenment and enjoyment of his members, facilitating and encouraging research, study, presentation of papers, and preservation of the history and lore of the people, events, and localities that made the American West wild. The Wild West History Association will center its focus primarily upon frontier lawmen and outlaws, but will encourage new research concerning gunfighters, vigilantes groups, feuds, cowtown life, mining camp life, and the gambling and saloon culture in the development of the west.

The charter membership in the Wild West History Association is composed of the former members of NOLA and WOLA. This group contains some of the most renowned historians, researchers and writers, as well as interested arm-chair historians, in the field today. These men and women encourage others to join their numbers. Interested persons can check the Wild West History Association Web site at for membership information.

The Wild West History Association will hold its first annual convention, the Wild West History Roundup, at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Tulsa in July 2008. The Roundup will include paper presentation, a field trip, and awards recognizing contributions to WWHA's field of study. The 2009 Roundup will be held in San Antonio, Texas.

The president of the WWHA board is Robert McCubbin, publisher-emeritus of True West magazine, of Santa Fe, New Mexico. The vice-president is Dakota Livesay, publisher of the Chronicles of the Old West newspaper, of Show Low, AZ.
