Captain Joseph Tumlinson

(November 23, 1874 - August 30, 1938)

Two pictures of the search for the grave of Captain Joseph Tumlinson who was a major player in the Sutton-Taylor Feud of South Texas.

Picture # 1 shows Jim and Sara Mundie, both WWHA members, at the grave site of Joe Tumlinson. Inside the fence is Chuck Parsons. The "Tumlinson Cemetery" consists of only four marked graves, although there are probably a few more which are unmarked. All the existing stones are broken and difficult to read.

Picture # 2 shows the headstone of Joseph Tumlinson. The engraving, with a Masonic symbol at top, reads as follows:

Joseph Tumlinson

Died

Nov. 23, 1874

Ae 63 y'rs

9 mos; & 7 days.

So man lieth down, and riseth not;

Till the heavens be no more, they

Shall not awake, nor be raised

Out of their sleep

The biblical verse is from Job 14:12 (King James)
